Olivia Pichardo is a reluctant groundbreaker as a woman in baseball

In her ideal world, Olivia Pichardo would just play ball and not take attention away from her teammates.

Brown Woman Pitcher

“Sometimes it feels a little ridiculous,” she told The Associated Press, “but it’s something I understand is going to happen. That's not what my primary focus is ever on.”

Pichardo has grown accustomed to being the only girl on her baseball team during her years in Little League, high school and travel ball. Four years ago she tried out for the Brown University team, made it and early in her freshman season became thefirst woman to appear in a Division I gamewhen she pinch-hit against Bryant.

On her senior day last Saturday, she became the first woman to pitch in a Division I game when she got the final out in a key win over Cornell.

“I feel like sometimes it might distract a bit too much from the success of our team,” Pichardo said. “We just made the playoffs for the first time since 2007, so that’s a huge accomplishment, and I wouldn’t want to take away from that."

Pichardo was listed as an outfielder and pitcher her first three years and focused only on pitching this season. The fact she stuck it out four years might seem surprising. Brown has played 151 games since Pichardo arrived, and she has appeared in only six. She pinch-hit once as a freshman, once as a sophomore and three times as a junior, when she also played right field for an inning and caught two flies.

Until Saturday, she hadn't appeared in a game this season, let alone warmed up in the bullpen. With Brown leading Cornell 16-3 in the ninth inning, coach Frank Holbrook's plan was to have little-used reliever Ty Harris get the first two outs and have Pichardo finish.

The 5-foot-7, 165-pound Pichardo has a four-pitch repertoire that includes a low-80s four-seam fastball to go with a sinker, changeup and curve. She entered with the bases loaded and threw two fastballs to Tyler Beaulieu, who grounded out to short to end Brown's 16-4 win.

Pichardo said she has never had any problem melding with her teammates. She prefers just being one of the guys and not taking spotlight away from the team. She does, however, understand the magnitude of what she’s accomplished, not just in college but also in summer ball. In 2023, she became the first woman to hit a home run in a summer league, connecting for Sag Harborin the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League.

“It’s important for inspiring the younger generation of female baseball players, give them some kind of hope, I guess, that if they want to play at the collegiate level, no matter what division, that door is open for them and it is possible,” she said.

Pichardo, who graduates this spring with a degree in business economics, has been able to capitalize on name, image and likeness opportunities as the most visible woman in college baseball. She's in her third year as an endorser for the baseball equipment and apparel company Warstic Sports and she has a deal with Topps Allen & Ginter baseball cards.

Once Brown's season ends, she'll turn her attention to trying out for the U.S. women's team that will play in the group stage of the 2027 World Cup. She has been a regular on Team USA since 2022 and pitched against Japan in the 2024 World Cup in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Pichardo said she's been grateful for every baseball opportunity since her father signed her up for a league in her hometown of Queens, New York, when she was 6.

“He didn't have any sons, so I like to say I was his designated son,” she said. “I've always been able to play at every level that I've progressed to, so there was never any reason for me to stop playing baseball just because I didn't see other women in the same space as me. It was my first sport, my first love and I knew I wanted to try and play at the highest level possible.”

Rockets start strong, don't let up to beat Lakers, stay alive in series

Amen Thompson scored a game-high 23 points, Tari Eason added 20 and the Houston Rockets averted elimination with a 115-96 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night in Game 4 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Field Level Media

All five starters scored in double figures for the Rockets, who played without Kevin Durant (ankle) for the third time in the series. Reed Sheppard chipped in 17 points on 4-for-7 3-point shooting while Alperen Sengun (19 points) and Jabari Smith Jr. (16 points) rounded out the balanced offensive attack. Eason and Smith grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

"We said we didn't want to let that last 30 seconds defeat us in another game, and we kind of put that behind us," Houston coach Ime Udoka said, referring to the team's Game 3 loss. "The focus was good today, and I think just in general, guys have pride, so you don't want to obviously get swept.

"We understood how well we played last game, and that was the big-picture perspective we had. We played a really good three quarters, and don't let that last 30 seconds take away from what you did. I think it was good carryover tonight."

The Rockets made headway by forcing 24 turnovers that they converted into 30 points. Houston scored 23 fastbreak points and limited the Lakers to 5-for-22 3-point shooting (22.7%).

"We understand that if we want to win this series, we have to protect the ball," LeBron James said. "The turnovers obviously killed us from the start to the finish."

After dominating Game 3 and co-authoring the Lakers' overtime victory, James (10 points, nine assists) and Marcus Smart (nine, five) shot a combined 5 of 17 from the floor. Deandre Ayton finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds but was ejected with 5:41 remaining in the third quarter after elbowing Sengun in the neck and incurring a flagrant-2 foul.

The Lakers will carry a 3-1 series lead back to Los Angeles for Game 5 on Wednesday.

Houston seized an 18-17 lead on a Sengun dunk at the 3:19 mark of the first quarter and didn't look back. The Lakers shot 41.2% (7 of 17) in the first period, missed both of their 3-pointers and conceded eight points off eight turnovers. Sengun played the entire first period for the Rockets.

"This is a top-10 defense the entire season," Lakers coach JJ Redick said about the Rockets. "It's obviously very challenging without your two leading scorers (Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves) to generate offense. We'll take a look at the process again on that end as well.

"Our points per shot and our expected points per shot were slightly below our season average, so to me, it goes back to the two keys: Take care of the ball. We'll look at that and how we can be better there."

The Rockets used a 16-4 run bridging the opening two periods to help extend to a 37-28 lead via a Sengun three-point play at the 6:35 mark of the second. When the Lakers sliced that deficit to three points, Josh Okogie keyed a 10-2 rally with a 3-pointer. Thompson added a pull-up jumper and a three-point play before Sheppard capped the run with a layup.

The Lakers shot 58.8% in the second quarter (10 of 17) but committed six turnovers in the frame and trailed 56-47 at the break. Houston pulled away in the third, opening the second half with a 12-4 burst before Eason drilled a corner 3 and Sengun completed another three-point play that pushed the lead to 76-55.

The Rockets led by as many as 28 points.

Pat Riley isn't retiring, and says he still has eyes on another Heat title run

MIAMI (AP) — Pat Riley had things to say.

Associated Press

No, he's not retiring. No, he's not resigning. No, he's not stepping aside as president of the Miami Heat. And no, the power dynamic at the top of the front office — managing general partner Micky Arison, CEO Nick Arison, Riley and executive vice president and general manager Andy Elisburg — hasn't changed much in his estimation, either.

At 81 — and steaming from a season in which the Heat missed the playoffs — Riley insisted Monday in his annual state-of-the-team session with reporters that he can still envision another championship parade down Biscayne Boulevard, just like he did when he first arrived in Miami 31 years ago.

“What is it that makes me want to do it? I love competition," Riley said. "I mean, I love this franchise, period. I love what we’ve built here over 30 years. You know, one day it will happen. Don’t think that I haven’t thought about it. I’m aging up, OK? I’m at 81 years old now. That’s aging up. I think Micky and Nick will decide whether or not I age out. But I love what I’m doing.”

Riley began his session with a statement, as is typical, and that's when he made clear that he's not interested in taking his nine NBA championship rings and Hall of Fame legacy and heading off into retirement.

The Heat have had largely the same front office for the majority of Riley's time in Miami; Nick Arison has been CEO since 2011, Micky Arison has owned the team for the entirety of Riley's stint, and Elisburg has been with the Heat in some capacity since even before its first game in 1988. It has been a collaborative and remains that way, and Riley seems more than fine with that.

Counting all games — regular season, playoffs and play-in — Miami has the fourth-best record in the NBA since Riley arrived in South Florida, behind only San Antonio, the Los Angeles Lakers, and Oklahoma City (counting that franchise's Seattle days).

“I don’t have final say here," Riley said. “I never had it. Never had it when I came here. And quite frankly, I don’t think I want it.”

The brain trust, it seems, is united on this front: Miami wasn't good enough this season.

The Heat have been in the play-in tournament in each of the last four years, going from there to the NBA Finals in 2023, but not getting out of the first round in the three seasons since. That's not good enough for anyone, himself included, Riley said.

“I hope things are different,” Riley said. “We're going to be very aggressive.”

Center Bam Adebayo — who had the 83-point game this season — turns 29 this summer and is going into his 10th season. Miami still wants to build around him, and knows how upset he was by a fourth consecutive trip to the play-in.

“I hope we can help Bam," Riley said. "He deserves more help. He just deserves to win more because he makes such a great effort. So, I don’t blame him for being frustrated.”

In other matters Riley discussed:

— Tyler Herro is having a preemptive surgery and should be on the court in a few weeks.

— The Heat are deep into the planning of a new training facility, though no deal has been announced.

— Speaking on the Terry Rozier situation — the former Heat guard is facing federal charges related to gambling — Riley indicated that he wasn't thrilled with the settlement that saw Charlotte send Miami a second-round pick this year. The Hornets got a first-rounder from Miami as part of the Rozier trade. “We didn’t negotiate that deal. The NBA did. ... That was not a very good situation," Riley said.

Simone Ashley is the latest in a growing list of stars to turn to Central Saint Martins’sMacy Grimshaw. And it’s no wonder why.

Last month, the London-based emerging designer made headlines when her “Paper Doll” look found its way toHarry Styles’sKiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionallyalbum art. The placement felt inevitable, given her long-established working relationship with the man behind Styles’s wardrobe—Harry Lambert—and her growing list of celebrity endorsements spanningPinkPantheress,Emma Corrin, andLola Young. Still, for a student wrapping up her Master’s degree, the opportunity could only be described as “insane.”

Now, Ashley has joined in on the fun. Working with stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, the actor selected a teal-blue silk slip for her trip to London, where she spent the past week promotingThe Devil Wears Prada 2alongside Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.

Printed with the image of a red slip, the piece offered a dress-on-dress inception moment. Red spaghetti straps blurred into printed ones, creating an illusion bound to have your head spinning back around for a double take.

Ashley wore the dress with chunky silver earrings and deep royal-blue heels. She pulled her hair back into a high ponytail and gave her cheeks a bit of rosy blush. A couple of sunflowers in hand were the perfect finishing touch.

For the rest of the London press tour, Ashley wore vintage Thierry Mugler, Versace, and Jil Sander looks, as well as Issey Miyake and Marni pieces from the Fall 2026 season. It’s safe to say Grimshaw was in good company.
